Wildlife and Bird Watching Destinations in Madhya Pradesh

Kanha National Park - Kanha is accessed from Bandhavgarh (260 kms) / Jabalpur (165 kms) /. Raipur (250 kms) / Nagpur (250 kms).

Kanha represents one of the best park experiences in India alongwith Kaziranga, Corbett and Nagarhole.

Tigers and Barasinghas are why most guests arrive at Kanha apart from the range of birds. Besides these Kanha three other species of deer (sambar, chital, and barking deer plus barasingha), as well as the antelope (nilgai, blackbuck, chowsingha) and the gaur are found alongwith langurs, sloth bears, and wild boar.

Kanha is home to more than 200 species of Birds, migratory as well as resident such as Black Partridge, Indian Peafowl, Lesser Whistling-duck, Spot-billed Duck, Common Teal, Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpecker etc.

Jungle Lodges and getaway resorts (Kanha is an ex-Jabalpur, ex-Raipur and ex-Nagpur getaway as well) in Kanha are around Kisli and Mukki Gates. Kisli attracts guests with a broader leisure travel profile looking for a wildlife experience along with typical wildlifers. Mukki is little cut off and seem to attract only wildlifers and kind of guests looking for exclusivity.

Kisli and Mukki gates are more popular. Guests who are not getting a permit for Kisli and Mukki ranges opt for Sarhi range, a newly opened park range.

Safaris - Jeep Safaris are arranged by the jungle lodges (Morning and Afternoon safaris - 3-4 hours each). Elephant back tiger tracking (Popularly known as the Tiger Show) could be available on some of the days but cant be pre-booked. Some Tigers are tracked and when they are resting, guests are taken upclose on an elephant back (10-15 minute per batch of guest, 4 per elephant). Jeep safaris booking in advance is a must to avoid disappointment later especially during high season.

Seasonality - Oct-March is considered good for Wildlife and Bird watching. April - May is good for photographers and Wildlifers. Temperatures can go upto 40 degrees celcius in May. Park is open 16th Oct - Mid-June.
