KE/13 - Lakshadweep Break (Ex-Cochin)

Route : Cochin (1) - Lakshadweep (Bangaram or Agatti) (3 nights to a week) - Cochin

Highlight - This is a short break for guests who prefer to get cast away on a remote island, explore Scuba diving, Snorkeling or even Deep sea fishing or just spend a few days in total seclusion away from mainland.

Activities in Lakshadweep
  • Glass Bottom boat ride

  • Scuba Diving

  • Snorkeling

  • Deep sea Fishing (Day or night)

  • Island Excursion

  • Speed Boating

  • Wind surfing

  • Water Skiing

Expert Speak - Maldives is also as accessible from Trivandrum as Lakshadweep Islands are from Cochin (A direct flight away). There are fundamental difference between the two depicted as under:

  • Maldives offers luxury oriented resorts spread over different islands. Lakshadweep Island Resorts are still very simple, where guests get a remote island experience. Lakshadweep is more off-beat and Maldives is more mainstream in terms of its offerings and feel.

  • Being remote islands, entry permits are required for Lakshadweep that come along with a Hotel reservation. Maldives Visa is given upon arrival and so only requires a valid passport with a 6 months validity upon arrival.

  • Lakshadweep has two private resorts i.e. Agatti Island Resort and Bangaram Island Resort. Maldives would have a 100.

  • Very limited flights ex-Cochin for Lakshadweep (Kingfisher Airlines flies Thrice a week). Maldives has regular direct flights from Trivandrum and even more via Colombo flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai.

  • For departures ex-Cochin (Lakshadweep) and Ex-Trivandrum(Maldives), both would require a one-way transit stay the previous night in most cases.

Accommodation Option - Agatti Island Resort - Bangaram Island Resort - Cochin

Seasonality - Mid-Oct - April is the best time to visit Lakshadweep. This is when the dive centres are operations and its possible to take a boat ride around (as sea is calmer). Mid-May onwards all transfers are done via Helicopter as the sea gets rough. Mid-May to Sept is the rough sea and monsoon time and so this is when islands are visited if idea is to do nothing.

Access : Cochin is the only arrival point from where one can access Lakshadweep. There is a 22 hour passenger ship that travels from Cochin to different islands of Lakshadweep on specific dates in during Winter months and so for those who cannot afford the flights, could take this up. Considering this is not a daily scheduled ship and not a cruiseliner (but a simple passenger ship), so not preferred by those who seek quality and comforts.
